Who Is Mzbel in Ghana?
Real name Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, Mzbel is a Ghanaian hiplife artiste, entrepreneur, brand ambassador, radio and television personality.
She is best known for her mega hit song, ’16 Years’, which generated a lot of controversy when it was released in 2005.
In 2015, the mother of one shocked many Ghanaians when she stated in an interview with Stacy Amoateng that she doesn’t believe in ‘it’ — Jesus Christ — anymore.

The name ‘Mzbel’, which is her stage name, was derived from “Miss Belinda”.

Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah was born to an engineer, Mr Albert A. Amoah and the late Madam Agnes Nyarko.
Mzbel is the last-born of seven female children of her parents.
She grew up within the environs of James Town and Mallam in Accra, Ghana.

Mzbel is known to be a Krobo girl. Based on the different backgrounds of her parents, she also comes from three different ethnic backgrounds, including Fante, Akuapem, and Ga.

Senior High School Education
Mzbel had her basic education at God’s Wisdom Preparatory school in Accra.
She had her junior high school education at Korle Gonno 1 and Owusu Mills’ Junior High School at Mamprobi in Accra, Ghana.
From 1995 to 1997, Mzbel attended Abuakwa State College for her senior high school education, where she studied General Arts, majoring in Economics, Geography, and French.
Because of financial constraints, Mzbel could not realize her dream of becoming a newscaster after she applied to become a student of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Between 1998 and 1999, Mzbel was convinced by a cousin, who supported her with some money, to apply to study at the Ghana Institute of Languages, where she trained to become a bilingual secretary.
Whilst at the Ghana Institute of Languages, Mzbel chose to offer a one-year course in Television Production at Manifold Tutorial College, studying Public Relations, TV & Radio Production.

Mzbel has one biological son, Aaron Adepa Amoah, and two adopted sons, John (Nii Mensah Bill) and Yullan.
On December 26th, 2020, Mzbel’s birthday was spoilt as she had one of her adopted sons, John, taken away from her by the biological mother.
According to Mzbel, who adopted John at age 3, his biological mother came for him because she had realized her son was now fit and had a future.
Baby Daddy, Father of MzBel’s Son
The true identity of the father of Mzbel’s biological son, Aaron Adepa Amoah, has remained a mystery to date.
However, ever since Mzbel explicitly admitted on the ‘Delay Show’ — hosted by Delaoris Frimpong Manso aka Delay — that former boss of the defunct UT Bank Holdings, Mr Prince Kofi Amoabeng slept with her a lot of times; many have concluded that the former UT boss is the father of her son, Aaron Adepa Amoah.
Mr Prince Kofi Amoabeng has, however, in an interview on Joy FM refuted the claim that he has a son with Mzbel although he stopped short of mentioning whether he had something to do with the ’16 Years’ hitmaker in the bedroom or not.

Also, ever since Mzbel got very close to former president John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, and later an audio conversion between Tracey Boakye and herself popping up on the internet, alleging an ‘amorous relationship’ between Mzbel and the ex president, some have linked her son to the former president of Ghana, although without any basis.
Radio & Television Career
After completing her courses both at the Ghana Institute of Languages and her brief stint with Manifold Tutorial College, Mzbel was offered the opportunity to do her internship with GBC Radio 1, where she became the host of a children’s programme, “Mmofrakyepem”.
Moving from GBC Radio 1, Mzbel, as an intern, joined Groove FM — which is now Adom FM, to co-host a programme that focused on children titled, ‘Kids on Groove’.
From Groove FM (now Adom FM), she joined TV3 Network as a production assistant for one of the station’s youth centered programmes which was known as Goldblast (now Music Music).

She also worked as floor manager for same and also as a production assistant for another programme, Talking Drum.
Music Career
In 2002, Mzbel began working with the newly established Hush Hush Studios — which had then surfaced at the time as a new production firm at Awudome Estate, Accra.
Whilst at Hush Hush Studios, she would make a dash to the production room where the sound engineers would play raw instrumentals for her to sing along, songs she had created.
She initially did it for fun and didn’t take it seriously.
Whilst she worked part-time at Hush Hush Studios, Mzbel grabbed another opportunity to work at Metro TV as the only digital video editor and also producer for ‘Smash TV’ — a weekend entertainment programme.

Due to some misunderstanding, Mzbel quit her job at Metro after a few months of working.
From Metro TV, she was employed by Apex Advertising as a video editor and production manager.
Because of the demanding nature of her job at Apex Advertising, Mzbel opted out and went on to do full-time music.
According to the ‘Saucy Girl’ hitmaker, her music career wasn’t planned but happened accidentally.
Mzbel narrates that, she one day had a call from the manager of Hush Hush Studios, informing her of the fact that some of the songs she used to record/sing at the studio whilst having fun, had been selected for production.
She was then told to come over and take pictures for posters and cassette inlays, and before she knew, her songs were all over with people wanting to know who Mzbel was.

In 2004, she released her maiden album with the title, ‘Awosome’.
In 2005, Mzbel dropped her second album titled, ‘16 Years’, which had several hits.
In 2007, after surviving the two harsh ordeals at KNUST and in her house, she released her third album, “It Dey Be”, which also generated a lot of controversies.
Controversies, Troubles
In 2005, after the release of her controversial ’16 Years’ album, Mzbel was unfortunately s.ex.ually harassed and manhandled by some students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, during a live performance.
The following year, 2006, Mzbel was hit with another trauma when some armed robbers stormed her house, and in the process s.ex.ually ab.used her plus the female dancers who stayed in the same house with her.
In 2008, she boycotted the then 2008 MTN Ghana Music Awards ceremony.
In March 2017, Mzbel admitted she used to bleach her skin in her teen years because it was the norm in Jamestown, where she grew up.

In February 2015, she shook the foundations of the media in Ghana when she revealed that she doesn’t believe in the existence of Jesus Christ anymore.
According to Mzbel, she did her own research and realized that the story of Jesus Christ was made up.
When the host of Restoration, Stacy Amoateng posed the question “do you believe in Jesus Christ?” to her, she said:
“Wow. Well, I don’t want to offend anybody. I used to believe in “it (referring to Jesus Christ)” but …errrrm I did my own research and errrrm I think it was made up. I think it was made up.

I turned down Nana Ama McBrown’s husband’s proposal to marry me
In July, 2019, Mzbel stoked another controversy in an interview with Zionfelix on Radio Univers when she stated that the husband of screen goddess Nana Ama Mcbrown, Maxwell Mensah Mawu proposed to marry her (Mzbel), and not his current wife (Nana Ama Mcbrown).

According to Mzbel, who claimed she never slept with Maxwell although they sometimes cuddled each other and had some romantic moments, she turned down the marriage proposal of Maxwell Mawu Mensah because she was not ready to make any commitment to their relationship.
Arrested For Alleging Stacy Amoateng Has HIV
In August, 2020, Mzbel was arrested by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for alleging in a radio broadcast that Ghanaian media personality, Stacy Amoateng of Restoration, was HIV positive.
According to DSP Obeng, the ’16 Years’ hitmaker was arrested on Monday, August 24th, 2020, at the instance of a petitioned filed by Stacy Amoateng at the CID office.
DSP Obeng added that Mzbel personally reported to the Police on her own volition before she was officially arrested.

In 2020, Nana Ekua Amoah and her “BeLCare Foundation” put smiles on the faces of the orphans of Grace Children’s Home, Huhunya.
