His rightful name, Sherif — which can also be spelt and pronounced in Arabic as ‘Sharif‘, ‘Shareef‘, ‘Sheriff‘, or ‘Chérif‘ — is a traditional Arabic title or name which means “noble”, “highborn” or “honourable”, and it is used to describe the descendants of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hassan ibn Ali.
He added ‘Black’ to Sherif because he is a Black African, and also to differentiate his ‘Sherif’ name from the other Sherifs.
In simple terms, Black Sherif means ‘High Born African’.
As to how he came by the ‘Blacko’ nickname, the ‘Destiny’ singer in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM explained that most of his buddies on the streets find his name (Black Sherif) too long to pronounce, hence the short form, Blacko.
Parents
Black Sherif was born to an Asante Muslim convert father Mr Frimpong and Muslim mother Ante Marie (or Ante Mariama), who both live abroad.

Black Sherif is a devout Muslim who prays 5 times a day and fasts throughout the statutory Ramadan month as stipulated in the Holy Quran.
The Highlife singer claims he doesn’t drink alcohol nor smoke although he glorifies the smoking of marijuana in some of his hit songs, especially the ‘Second Sermon’.

Black Sherif arrested on final exams day?
During a live interview with DJ Reuben on Luv 99.5 FM in Kumasi, one of the listeners named Clinton Moore — who sounded like a schoolmate of Sherif — commented that he (Black Sherif) was arrested right after writing their last exams paper which was Social Studies.
Black Sherif, who initially felt reluctant in responding to the said allegation, finally admitted that he, together with some of his roommates who had been tagged as ‘stubborn or bad boys’ on campus, were indeed arrested and sent to the Asokore Mampong Police Station for interrogation and scrutiny.
However, he added that after they had been detained and interrogated by the Asokore Mampong Police personnel, he and some of his colleagues were freed because their arrest was a mistaken identity.
Music Career
Black Sherif aka Blacko started off as a dancer while a student at Kumasi Accademy (KUMACA) in Kumasi, before venturing into music.
Sherif used to be called Aaabwoy (Abuoy) in KUMACA and remained as one of the best dancers for his school until his completion in 2019.
According to Black Sherif, his music journey began when he started failing some of his exam papers in school and, as a result, decided to write songs to battle his peers in a small rap competition.
Most of the songs he writes talk about abject poverty amongst the youth on the streets and the need to hustle through thick and thin to make it in life.
In 2019, he dropped ‘Cry For Me’ which announced him to the music fraternity in Ghana.
On May 25th, 2020, Black Sherif premiered the hit banger, ‘Money’ on Youtube which has, so far, garnered over 900,000 views.
