Former KMA Mayor Nana Akwasi Agyemang alias Okumkɔm has died
Yours Truly, BieGyaNation.Com regrets to announce the demise of former Chief Executive of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Nana Akwasi Agyemang alias Okumkɔm.
He died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital at exactly 5:30 a.m on Tuesday, January 14th, 2019 in Kumasi.
Nana Akwesi Agyemang who was a member of the Oyoko Royal Family of Asanteman died at the age of 86.
He earned the name Okumkɔm during his reign as the KMA boss for his no-nonsense style of leadership.
Okumkɔm before passing was known to be a strong member of the National Democratic Congress and a great protege of former President J.J Rawlings who made him the boss of KMA.
He later abandoned the NDC and joined the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The late Nana Agyemang served as chairman of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly as far back as 1977 during the Supreme Military Council government of the late Ignatius Kutu Acheampong.
He subsequently went on to serve as Mayor under two other Heads of State, Dr. Hilla Limann and Flt. Lt Jerry John Rawlings, to whom he became a close confidante.
He was appointed Deputy Minister of Science and Environment under Rawlings’ regime and was also considered a leading contender for the vacant Asante Stool following the demise of Otumfuo Opoku Ware II in 1999.
Current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was chosen over him by the kingmakers of Asanteman.
Nana Akwasi Agyemang alias Okumkɔm remains to be the uncle of the King of Asanteman, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
